Don't Make This Mistake, When The Police Arrive

August 03, 20213 min read

What's Up Sheepdogs? Ryan here with Tampa Carry.

If you are a Florida concealed carry permit holder you know the massive responsibility that comes with using a firearm in self defense.

But do you know exactly what you're suppose to do after a shooting? Better yet do you know what to do when the police arrive?

He Made A Huge Mistake...

Recently I heard a story of a man who was forced to use deadly force against a home intruder in Florida. It was the middle of the night when suddenly the homeowner heard something break downstairs. So he grabbed his home defense pistol and went downstairs to investigate.

As he walked downstairs, he was immediately confronted by a home intruder. The home intruder noticed the gun and lunged to disarm the homeowner. Bang, a shot went off and the home intruder fell to the ground.

This homeowner called 911 and explained that there had been a self-defense shooting. Up until this point, he had done everything right — that is until the police arrived. You see, the homeowner knows that he is the good guy.

However, the police don't know that. When the police arrived on the scene, the homeowner walked outside with the pistol still in his hand.

When The Police Arrived...

“Drop the weapon! Drop the weapon!” the officers screamed.

This was confusing to the homeowner because he was the victim, so why would he need to drop his weapon? The homeowner attempted to explain this verbally, but the scene was too chaotic and the police opened fire killing the homeowner.

This man failed to follow the simple steps found inside my Florida concealed carry permit course, and it cost him his life.
Step 1. Shoot until the threat is no longer a threat.
Step 2. Follow the threat to the ground.
Step 3. Assess the area for additional threats.
Step 4. Get yourself to a secured location.
Step 5. Call 911.
Step 6. When the police arrive, drop your weapon and get on the floor with your hands on your head.

When the police arrive at the scene of a shooting, they have one objective: to secure the area. This means identifying who was involved and ensuring that the area is free from a potential threat.

If you come strolling out of your house with an AK-47 in your hands, you better believe the police are going to perceive you as a threat.

This Is What I'm Going To Do?

In my opinion, as soon as the police arrive at the scene, I will drop my firearm and walk away from it. I don’t want the gun too close to me.

Then I'm going to lie on the ground with my hands on my head. When the police arrive, they will approach you very aggressively, probably with guns drawn. They are going to handcuff you and potentially separate you from other people who were involved.

Unfortunately It's very easy to make a mistake after a self defense shooting. Please remember this lesson and burn it into your subconscious.

That's all I have for today. So until next time keep training and stay safe...
